Job losses at Seagate in Derry
One of Derry’s largest employers has announced it is to make a number of its staff redundant.
Seagate Tehnologies, which employs around 1,300, said 14 workers were to lose their jobs at its Springtown factory.
A spokesperson said: “Seagate can confirm that, as a part of continual optimisation of workforce resources, it has initiated an action to reduce the company's workforce by approximately 1,000 employees globally (about 2 per cent).
“At the Springtown facility, 14 employees will be affected by this action.
“Seagate continues to make investments that target growth and drive future technologies to achieve its vision.
“Given the complexities of Seagate's markets and business, along with the investments that need to be made, it is necessary that the company continually reviews its operations and spending, making adjustments as needed.”
The spokesperson concluded: “Unfortunately, at times, the workforce is affected by these decisions.”
In October last year, the company announced it was to create 35 jobs at its Derry site as part of a £|34.7 million investment in a major research and development project.
