A 40-year-old man has appeared at Derry Magistrates Court charged with the sexual assault of a 12-year-old girl in the city at the weekend.

Tomas Varga, a Cech national from Union Street in Ballymoney, is accused of carrying out the offence on Saturday last.

The court heard at the time of the alleged offence, he was with another man at the time and was intoxicated.

Defence solicitor, Seamus Quigley, told the court Varga had told police he and a friend had come to the city “for the night.”

Varga was released on his own bail of £750 and excluded from Derry except for court appearances and legal consultations.

He was also ordered not to be intoxicated in a public place, not to have contact with the injured party or any witnesses and to report to Ballymena police station once a week.

He is due back in court again on 2 July next.
