Man with record '433 previous convictions' remanded at Derry Court

Joseph Damian Young (57) was remanded in custody charged with criminal damage to a door
A man with 433 previous convictions which a judge said 'must be some sort of record' has been remanded in custody at Derry Magistrate's Court today charged with criminal damage to a door.
Joseph Damian Young (57) of no fixed abode admitted a charge of attempted criminal damage to a door on May 2 and criminal damage to the same door on May 13.
The court heard that on May 2 Young had been refused entry to Foyle Haven and kicked at the door.
A similar incident on May 13 resulted in damage to the door valued at £2,000.
Defence counsel Grainne McAnaney said her client accepts his behaviour was totally unacceptable.
She said that Young had not been drinking at the time and wanted to enter the Foyle Haven and 'became frustrated' when he was not allowed to do so.
District Judge Barney McElholm said that Foyle Haven was a community group that was now going to have to find £2,000.
At this point Young interrupted the court to say he had the money available and was willing to pay it.
Judge McElholm said that if this was so he would take a different attitude than he had been prepared to take.
Young was remanded in custody until May 23 to see if the money was available.
