There is not enough evidence to convict a 35-year-old man of the attempted murder a police officer, Derry Magistrates Court was told today.

Sean McVeigh, from Victoria Street in Lurgan, is also accused of possessing explosives with intent to endanger life,

The charge relates to the discovery of a bomb under the car of a police officer's car at his home in Eglinton on 18 June last year.

During today’s hearing, defence counsel Peter Corrigan told the court the defence had received disclosure of an explosives forensic science report and its had not been put to McVeigh during police interviews.

Mr Corrigan said the defence believed there was “not significant evidence to connect” McVeigh to the offences.

He added the report the PSNI was using as evidence to prosecute McVeigh had bben compiled by the An Garda Síochána who had described it as 'weak' and did not proceed with prosecution.

Mr Corrigan said the PSNI were relying on this same report to prosecute but the Public Prosecution Service said there was more evidence against McVeigh.

The matter was adjourned until June 27 when a bail application will be made.
