News that the international rankings – Trends in International Maths and Science Study (TIMSS) published this week – show the North has the highest-achieving primary school pupils in Europe in major international tests in maths, has been welcomed by Sinn Fein’s education spokesperson in Derry.

Councillor Patricia Logue said the statistics also show pupils here are the sixth best in the world at the subject.

Cllr Logue added: “It is a real success story that numeracy has improved among students in the North.

"As Education Minister Caitríona Ruane initiated the Literacy and Numeracy Signature Projects and it was launched in 2012 by my party colleague, then Education Minister John O'Dowd.

“The Literacy and Numeracy Signature Projects have seen year-on-year improvements in achievement and attainment levels.”

Cllr Logue concluded: “Under Sinn Féin ministers over the past decade we have seen year-on-year improvements in achievement and attainment levels.”
