Planning permission has been granted for 45 new houses in the Waterside area of Derry.

The houses are to be built at two separate sites by Taggart Homes close to the Premier Inn hotel at Crescent Link.

Planning permissions for both housing developments were granted at a meeting this week of Derry City and Strabane District Council’s planning committee.

One of the developments will be made up 36 detached houses while the other development will incorporate nine detached houses.

A planning official told the meeting at the Guildhall on Monday that previous applications had been made for a total of 80 houses on the two sites.

However, the official said these plans had been scaled back to a total of 45 properties.

SDLP councillor Angela Dobbins noted that the new developments were on sites close to Lisneal College and asked if Transport NI had any issues with the new houses from a traffic point of view.

However, the planning official said that Transport NI had no issues with the development.

Sinn Fein councillor Christopher Jackson welcomed the plans for the new houses as he said some sections of the Crescent Link had been ‘left unfinished’.

He added that he was pleased to see that the proposed number of houses had been scaled back.

Councillors gave unanimous support to the two separate planning applications for the Crescent Link houses.
