SDLP Foyle MLA Mark H Durkan has welcomed statistics released relating to action taken by joint operations of the PSNI traffic section and the DVA on the Strand Road and City Centre.

Mr Durkan said: “The people of the Strand Road and other central areas in the City have long suffered as a result of the ongoing issue of anti-social behaviour by some inconsiderate and dangerous road users.

"My office has been dealing with this matter consistently and has been calling for more police action and visibility in these areas. We were pleased to have the joint authorities agree to a series of operations prior to Christmas which are to continue throughout this start of this year.

"I have been furnished with some of the results of these operations which shows a number of concerning statistics including arrests relating to excess alcohol, defective dangerous vehicles, vehicle seizures and over 100 traffic related incidences to name a few.

"These statistics show the extent of the problem in this area and on our roads in general. I hope that they will also encourage more resources into the policing of this problem and thereby improving the road safety for all our citizens.

"However there are still issues that need to be addresses including the noise generated by these boy-racers that is such a nuisance to the people living along the Strand Road."
