PSNI welcome sentence in Derry GBH assault case
Victim of the attack sustained physical injuries which left him seriously ill and extremely traumatised
Detectives from the Police Service's Criminal Investigation Division have welcomed the sentence handed down to a 29-year-old man for a 'one punch assault' that left a man in Intensive care on a night out in Derry city centre last year.
Caoimhin McSheffrey was sentenced yesterday (Thursday, 1st February), at Derry Crown Court to two years in jail, suspended for three years, for the offences of grievous bodily harm and common assault. The offences were committed on 2 May, 2022, on Waterloo Street.
Speaking after sentencing, Detective Sergeant Gingell from the Police Service's Criminal Investigation Division said: "The victim sustained a serious head injury as a result of being assaulted and spent a period of time in hospital.
“Not only did the victim sustain physical injuries, which left him seriously ill, but he was also left extremely traumatised.
"He was on a night out and should have made it home safely, instead he ended up in hospital.
"What happened to him had a horrendous impact and I want to thank him for his bravery and support throughout our investigation."
Detective Sergeant Gingell added: "I hope today's sentencing sends a message to anyone who believes that violence can go unpunished, that the Police Service is committed to apprehending perpetrators and bring offenders before the Court."
