Police appeal for witnesses following the delivery of a viable explosive device to local hotel premises.

A investigation is underway today after a viable bomb was delivered to a hotel in Derry.

The discovery sparked a massive security alert yesterday afternoon in the busy Ebrington Square area, forcing the evacuation of hotel guests, staff, and neighbouring businesses.

Police confirmed they received a report at around 3.20pm on Tuesday that a suspicious package had been delivered to a local hotel.

Condemning those behind the incident, Chief Superintendent Kearney described it as a "reckless and targeted attack".

“Police received a report at around 3.20pm this afternoon, Tuesday, October 27, that a suspicious package had been delivered to a hotel in the city, Chief Superintendent Kearney said.

“Officers attended the scene and a number of people were subsequently evacuated from the premises, along with staff from neighbouring premises, during the public safety operation that followed.

“Ammunition Technical Officers (ATO) attended the scene, examined the object, and carried out a controlled explosion on the device which was deemed to be viable. The item has now been taken away for forensic examination and an investigation has commenced.

“I condemn this reckless and targeted attack, and I recognise the significant disruption and distress it has caused to the local community.

“We would appeal to anyone with any information which might assist us to contact 101, quoting reference number 1089 of 27/10/26.

“You can also submit a report or information online using the non-emergency reporting form via www.psni.police.uk/makeareport, or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or online at www.crimestoppers-uk.org/.”

Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council Cllr Grace Uí Niallais has condemned the incident involving a viable device at Ebrington last night and expressed her concern and solidarity with everyone impacted.

She said: “My thoughts are with the staff and anyone impacted. This was a serious and reckless incident which has no doubt caused trauma to all involved.

“We will not go back to the past but instead look forward to the fantastic four days of Halloween celebrations ahead. Derry is world-renowned for its Halloween festival, and our focus remains firmly on showcasing the very best of our city and our people.

“Halloween is the best of us and I will be encouraging everyone to come along, enjoy the celebrations and be part of what makes Derry such a special place."

The Chair of Derry and Strabane Policing and Community Safety Partnership (PCSP) has condemned the discovery of a viable explosive device in Ebrington Square on Tuesday.

Darren Guy, PCSP Chair said: “I condemn this attack in the strongest terms. A viable explosive device was delivered to a hotel in Ebrington Square on Tuesday afternoon, in a busy part of the city where people were working, visiting and enjoying a Halloween funfair during the half-term break. Whoever is responsible showed no regard for the safety of local people, and it could have caused serious harm.

“My thoughts are with the hotel staff, guests and neighbouring businesses who were evacuated, and with the families and young people nearby. I want to thank the PSNI officers and Army bomb disposal experts for their swift and professional response, which kept people safe once again.

“This attack is not representative of this city. The overwhelming majority of people here want to live and work in a safe, welcoming community, and they reject those who would drag us backwards. Halloween should be a week of celebration and enjoyment, and I would encourage everyone to continue to support local events and businesses.

“I urge anyone with information about this incident to contact the PSNI on 101, or to call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
