Recruitment of additional road workers welcomed

‘Positive step that will strengthen the roads workforce and improve the delivery of road maintenance services’
Derry City and Strabane District councillor Christopher Jackson (Sinn Féin) has welcomed the update on the recruitment of new road workers, given by Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins.
Mr Jackson described it as “a positive step that will strengthen the roads workforce and improve the delivery of road maintenance services”.
He added: “I welcome the proactive measures from the Minister to recruit more road maintenance workers which has seen hundreds of applications.
“Rebuilding the road maintenance workforce is essential if we are to deliver a more resilient, efficient and cost-effective road network.
“Years of British austerity has reduced the roads workforce, leading to an overreliance on contractors and increased costs.
“Investing in skilled roadworkers, alongside the new Road Maintenance Strategy, will help strengthen the Department's capacity to move towards preventative maintenance, respond more effectively to severe weather events and deliver better outcomes for communities across the North.”
