'Serial perpetrator of domestic abuse' remanded at Derry Magistrate's Court

Kiral McGilloway (35) of Drumbane Gardens in Derry appeared charged with a series of domestic abuse offences
A man described in court as a 'serial perpetrator of domestic abuse' with seven previous convictions for similar offences has been remanded in custody at Derry Magistrate's Court today.
Kiral McGilloway (35) of Drumbane Gardens in Derry appeared charged with a series of domestic abuse offences.
He was charged with non-fatal strangulation of a female on October 15, abuse of the communication network, domestic abuse and two counts of assault all on the same date.
A police officer connected the accused to the charges and opposed bail.
She told the court that police were contacted by the alleged victim in the case, the ex-partner of the accused, alleging that the defendant had sent her 'multiple Tik Toks' on October 15 which were abusive and made allegations against her.
She told police he then attended her home address and an argument ensued after he accused her of cheating.
She said he grabbed her by the throat and pulled her by the arm.
The woman said she had shouted for help and received a text from a neighbour who heard the noise.
The woman also told police about an earlier incident in which she said he had pushed her out of the house.
At interview McGilloway denied the charges and claimed he had been sick all week and had not seen the alleged victim for a period.
He told police that his mother could corroborate this so police contacted his mother who said he had been unwell but had left the house for a number of hours and confirmed that the injured party had been at the address.
Bail was opposed due to the risk of re-offending and a police officer said that the defendant had other cases involving the same woman.
She also said that the defendant had charges relating to his mother and sister.
Defence counsel Stephen Chapman said that the alleged victim in the case had previously made withdrawal statements in cases involving McGilloway.
Deputy District Judge Austin Kennedy said he was concerned if he released the defendant 'history would repeat itself'.
He refused bail and remanded McGilloway in custody to appear again on October 29.
