Suspended sentence for Derry man who assaulted his mother

A man who admitted assaulting his mother and damaging household items has been given a suspended sentence at Derry Magistrates’ Court today.
Conor Walker (29) of Fallowlea Park in Derry admitted two charges that occurred on September 19.
The court heard that police were called at 3.20am on that date by the defendant's mother who said he was drunk and 'wrecking the house'.
Police were told the defendant came in drunk and this led to an argument in the course of which he grabbed her by the chin.
The woman told police he then damaged items including a TV and that she was 'scared' of the defendant.
At interview Walker made no comment.
Defence solicitor Keith Kyle said that Walker had pleaded guilty at the first opportunity. He said obviously the defendant could not return to his mother's address and planned to seek emergency accommodation.
Deputy District Judge John Rea said the court took a 'very serious view' of an assault on a mother. He said the mother had taken a very generous attitude towards the damage done to the household items but one could not assess 'the damage done to the relationship'.
Walker was given three months in prison suspended for a period of two years.
