Infrastructure Minister confirms all roadworks to be suspended

SDLP MLA Mark H Durkan has welcomed confirmation that roadworks in Derry for the remainder of the week, citing significant traffic disruption during the ongoing O’Neill’s Foyle Cup tournament.

The decision follows a priority Assembly Question tabled by Mr Durkan to the Minister for Infrastructure. Mr Durkan previously criticised the lack of planning around this key event, following significant traffic disruption caused by a series of roadworks during the 2025 event.

The MLA for Foyle said: “I wrote to the Infrastructure Minister last week, ahead of the Tournament to ask for a suspension of all roadworks and to ensure the Department were aware of and prepared for the event. I’m delighted that my proposal has been granted and hope it will help prevent the congestion and confusion witnessed last July.

“Last year, one of Derry’s biggest annual events, was marred by lane closures and roadworks. It resulted in gridlock right across the city that didn’t just impact players and families trying to make matches on time, but all road users.

“The Foyle Cup is a well-established, annual tournament that brings thousands of visitors into the city. There needs to be future planning going forward to accommodate it. A suspension of all non-essential roadworks is a common-sense measure but it will make a significant difference.

“I’m glad that lessons have been learned and I look forward to the Tournament.”
