Train diversions prompt level crossing safety warning - Derry trains to use largely disused line

Passengers travelling on the Derry to Belfast railway line this Sunday are facing a diversion - over an old railway line now that is shut for most of the year.

Due to engineering works, trains will not operate along the normal stretch of line from Antrim to Belfast Central.

Instead, trains will be diverted from Antrim over the run-down "Knockmore line"  to Lisburn where it joins the main Portadown to Belfast line.

And a safety alert has been issued to motorists and people along the Knockmore line, who may be surprised to see trains.

Frank Moore, Route Manager NI Railways, said, “I would remind crossing users on the Knockmore line that there will be passenger services operating all day on March 23rd.  While the majority of crossing users are responsible and engage with our signallers before and after crossing the line, it is more important than ever that they adhere to safe systems of working.”

A temporary train timetable will be operation.

The photo above shows the disused Ballinderry station that passengers will see this Sunday when travelling on Derry trains that will be diverted to use the Knockmore line between Antrim and Lisburn.
