Donegal councillor calls for tax cuts on 'punishing' fuel prices

Cllr Jack Murray has urged the Government to cut fuel and heating-oil taxes as rising costs put increasing pressure on Donegal households.
A Donegal councillor has called on the government to take action on rising fuel prices.
Cllr Jack Murray, Sinn Féin, shared on a social media post that the rising cost of fuel and oil is putting pressure on families as winter approaches.
Cllr Murray, from Bunrcana, said: “ For those driving to work this morning, the cost of filling your car has become even more punishing. With prices approaching €2.20 a litre, and a significant proportion of the price made up of tax, these costs are becoming unaffordable for many households.
“In a county like Donegal, where having a car is essential for the vast majority of people, this is simply not sustainable. And with winter approaching, the soaring cost of home heating oil is another major worry for households.
“Government can, and must, act. Taxes on petrol and diesel need to be cut, and the carbon tax on home heating oil scrapped. People shouldn't simply be expected to absorb higher and higher costs for getting to work, bringing children to school or heating their homes.
The Government has choices. Cut the taxes. Bring down the cost of fuel. Give households some breathing space.”
