Donegal Gardaí made 18 arrests related to drink or drug driving in the last week, in what was described as “extremely worrying figures.”

Five of the arrests were for the defendant suspected of driving while under the influence of drugs whilst 13 of the arrests were for the defendant suspected of driving while under the influence of alcohol from May 13 to 20.

Garda Sean Sweeney of Buncrana Garda Station urged drivers “to not even consider getting behind the wheel while under the influence of any type of intoxicant” following the arrests.

He said: “We regularly make this appeal but unfortunately it seems to fall on deaf ears in some cases. Everybody is very well aware of the risks associated with driving under the influence yet there are obviously still drivers who are willing to take that risk.

“They risk their own life and the lives of others by doing so. We are continuously trying to make our roads safer by means of education and also by means of enforcement. We cannot do it alone. Too many lives are destroyed and also lost because of this type of irresponsible behaviour.”
