Gardaí share safety advice at Cara House in Letterkenny

The event was held in Letterkenny’s Cara House and had a high number of attendees
Cara House and An Garda Síochána hosted a winter safety event in Letterkenny this afternoon.
The event, held at Cara House, had a higher-than-expected number of attendees, with Letterkenny locals attending the talk.
Crime Prevention Officer Sargent Fergus McGroary and Garda Gerard McNamee led the discussion, with Garda Gráinne Doherty and Trainee Garda Ryan Stewart in attendance.
Katie McGee, Cara House’s Active Age Co-Ordinator, and Cara House’s manager Martina McGinty sat in on the talk, expressing their happiness with the large turnout.
Attendees were informed about how to stay safe this winter.
The slideshow presentations included information on how to prevent home and farm burglaries, staying safe on social media, recognising scam calls and texts, and road safety.
Sergeant McGraory recommended using high-visibility vests when walking in the dark as evenings get shorter, installing a doorbell with a live video camera to stay alert, and being aware of oil theft as the weather gets cooler.
The Seniors Alert Scheme (SAS) was also recommended. SAS is a programme that provides a free monitored personal alarm to help eligible people aged 65 or older live safely, securely, and independently in their own homes.
The Gardaí suggested using ScamChecker.ie by FraudSMART, as the Christmas shopping season begins, to prevent being caught out by fraudulent websites asking for payment.
The Letterkenny Gardaí asked that if you require help or need assistance to call into the Letterkenny Garda Station or call (074) 916 7100. In the event of an emergency, call 999 or 112.
