Repairs were carried out to the 'small leak' following investigative work

Repairs had to be carried out following a leak at the wastewater treatment plant at Donegal Town pier.

The leak was detected following investigative work at Donegal Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) last week.

Locally there were reports of a foul odour and of matter being pumped into the bay near the pier. This led to much concern, given that the area is used by a number of local watersports groups.

The pier area was closed to the public while works were being carried out, and a traffic management system was in place.

Irish Water working in partnership with Donegal County Council and Veolia Water Ireland Ltd. (operators of the Donegal Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP)) confirmed that they undertook investigative works. On June 8, wastewater was removed by tanker from the network to minimise flow into the pumping station. All wastewater continues to be treated at Donegal WWTP.

Morgan Cox, National Water and Wastewater DBO Lead with Irish Water, told Donegal Live: “The repairs are being conducted as quickly and efficiently to minimise disruption to the area and restore normal wastewater operations as soon as possible. We appreciate the local community’s patience as we continue with this repair work this afternoon.”

“Irish Water regrets any inconvenience caused due to these works and thanks customers for their patience while we work to restore normal service.

“Irish Water is responsible for the delivery of all public water and wastewater services in Ireland. We are committed to continuously upgrading and developing critical infrastructure to support the growth needed in housing and across our economy, while protecting the environment and safeguarding water supplies.”
