After community protest, traffic calming measures have been put in place

Lettermacaward will now have periodic speed limits for Scoil Bhríde.

The periodic 30km/h speed signs will be used during school pick-up and drop-off times.

Sinn Féin Councillor Brian Carr welcomed the development, saying: “Delighted to see, at our latest Speed Limit Review meeting, that the school will now have periodic 30km/h speed signs in place during school drop-off and pick-up times.

“At our first review meeting in May, I noticed that Scoil Bhríde had been left out of the proposal. I spoke with Principal Ciarán and the Development Group and invited them to attend the public consultation event in Dungloe to make their case.

“They turned up in great numbers, presented a strong case, and thankfully, their efforts paid off! It’s fantastic to see the decision reversed and Scoil Bhríde will now be included. A great result for the children, the school and the entire community. First of many steps needed to make the village safer and reduce speed.”

Earlier this month, members of the community held a ‘Slow Down’ protest, demanding that traffic calming measures be immediately put in place on the N56.

Community groups, local parents, staff, and children from Scoil Bhride and Scoil Meenagowan organized the demonstration after a planned €95,000 safety scheme by Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) and Donegal County Council was categorized as a low priority (Level 4) because the road lacked serious or fatal collisions.
