Scoil Cholmcille, An Tearmann, has expressed its pride in former student Barry Gallagher, whose show - and a feature he did at his old school - have won European awards.
RTÉ’s news programme for children, news2day, has won the Best News Story award at the annual European Broadcasting Union conference of youth broadcasters in Paris this week, and that title was added to by his local piece.

In a strong field of 18 entries including from BBC Newsround, TG4 Cula Nuacht, NRK in Norway, Arte in France and ZDF in Germany, news2day’s report by Barry Gallagher and cameraman Brian McVeigh, explaining Ireland’s PR-STV voting system, was voted for by other public service editorial teams. It was praised for its ability to explain a very complicated voting system to children in an engaging manner with warmth, humour and clarity. The report has had more than one million views on social media.
"Some of you may remember when our fifth and sixth class students starred in a video explaining Ireland’s PR-STV voting system," Scoil Cholmcille, An Tearmann posted. "Past pupil Barry Gallagher presented the report on RTÉ’s kids news programme News2day. During the week, we received the news that the report had won a European Award for best kids news story!!."
