Clly Niamh Kennedy has advised for people to avoid the crossing at Glencolmcille beach

A Donegal County Councillor has warned people about the dangers of quicksand after a man got into trouble in the county's south-west.

The dangerous patch of sinking sand is concentrated at Glencolmcille beach, where the fresh-water stream flows across the sand towards the sea, right by the main access steps across from the Folk Village.

Cllr Niamh Kennedy, an independent from Killybegs, said the council will put up warning signs after the incident and advised people to avoid the crossing in the meantime.

She said the man in question “never experienced this before” and had bother getting out.

“I have been asked to alert people walking the beach in Glencolmcille across from The Folk Village by the steps,” Cllr Kennedy posted on Sunday.

“The stream crossing towards the beach has quicksand. A gentleman walking his dog today got a terrible shock when in seconds he was knee-deep. This man has walked here for many years and never experienced this before; he had trouble getting out. Please, if possible, avoid this area until we can get warning signs up.”
