Councillor makes urgent call for funding for island wall

The storm wall which is located on Tory Island needs to be addressed before disaster hits, a councillor has warned.

The sea wall on Tory Island was started many years ago but was not finished to the correct standard due to shortages in funding Independent Councillor Michael McClafferty has said.

"It is imperative that the cap on top of the wall is finished to save the houses behind it. If that is not done houses could possibly get smashed away," the councillor who is on Tory Island this morning said.

He is calling on the wall being extended towards the ocean for an area covering between a quarter and half a mile.

Cllr McClafferty has spoken to Donegal County Council in relation to the matter.

"We need to be proactive about it now and do something before it is too late," he warned.

He also addressed the issue of the height of an area beside the storm wall. He said those who may not be aware of the area could fall ten feet. He said the fall is a danger to locals and tourists especially in the dark - he deemed it a 'health and safety issue.'

"It is very, very serious," he said. The Dunfanaghy-based councillor appealed to all Government parties to address the issue as soon as possible before 'disaster' hits.
