Appeals have been lodged with An Bord Pleanála over plans by Carndonagh Football Club to develop a new sporting facility on the outskirts of the town.

The club was granted planning permission last month by Donegal County Council to develop a site at Carrickafoden.

The planned development is for a new two-storey clubhouse and sports hall to include changing and showering facilities, a function room and an indoor training pitch.

Two objections from local residents were lodged against the plans expressing concern about noise and light pollution, an increase in traffic in the area and the potential impact on the Trawbreaga Bay special protection area.

Appeals have been lodged with the planning board by Kathleen and Robert Moore and Carolyn McKinley.

The development also consists of three outdoor pitches, including a main grass pitch, a grass training pitch, a 3G pitch and a walking track.

The club's proposed development at Carrickafoden is part of a joint plan to develop a €3m family hub and sport facilities in the town.

Carndonagh FC plans to vacate its current home at St Patrick's Park, which is to be turned into Donegal’s first child and family hub, developed by Spraoi, the local social enterprise.

An Bord Pleanála says a decision on the appeal is due in October.
