Motorists have been warned to check their tyres after fixed charge penalty notices were issued by gardaí for tyre offences at checkpoints in Inishowen.
Gardaí from the Buncrana roads policing unit were assisted by Revenue and Social Welfare enforcement officers at checkpoints on Wednesday in Malin, Carndonagh and St Johnston.
A large number of vehicles were stopped and checked and a small number of fixed charge penalty notices were issued by gardaí for tyre offences.
Motorists have been urged to check their tyres regularly and even more regularly when the tread depth reaches 3mm as the legal minimum tread depth is 1.6mm.
“The more worn your tyres become, the less grip they will have on the road surface,” a Garda spokesperson said.
“We urge all drivers to conduct the necessary safety checks on their car before getting behind the wheel. Please do not take to the road if your car is not in a roadworthy condition.”
