Boats not using pump-out stations contributing to river pollution, Leitrim councillor warns

Cllr Sean McGowan urged the Council to contact Waterways Ireland to ensure that boat and cruiser traffic on the Shannon are using the pump-out stations at Carrick-on-Shannon, Dromod, and Leitrim Village.
Some of the pollution in the River Shannon is coming from boats not using the pump-out stations to dispose of sewage, a meeting of Carrick-on-Shannon Municipal District has heard.
Cllr Sean McGowan urged the Council to contact Waterways Ireland to ensure that boat and cruiser traffic on the Shannon are using the pump-out stations at Carrick-on-Shannon, Dromod, and Leitrim Village.
“Given the large number of boats and cruisers on the Shannon from Easter through to October, there is potential to cause serious pollution, to a source of drinking water and to a valuable tourist asset and public amenity,” his motion stated.
Cllr McGowan noted that cruiser traffic and boats on the Shannon are “very welcome,” but emphasised that there must be a way to ensure boats are using the pump-out facilities.
“I’ve been told a lot of the pollution in the Shannon is as a result of the boats discharging into the Shannon,” he said, also highlighting the cost of ensuring there is proper drinking water.
His motion was seconded by Councillors Farrell and Guckian-Rabbitte.
Cllr McGowan also pointed out that during the summer, the number of people on the Shannon is equivalent to the combined population of Drumshanbo and Ballinamore, making it “hugely important” that they use the pump-out facilities.
It was confirmed that correspondence will be issued to Waterways Ireland to find out more about the situation.
