A number of schools across Leitrim have been forced to close due to difficult travel conditions, as the national forecaster has extended the snow and ice weather warning until tomorrow, Tuesday, January 6.

This morning has brought snow and icy conditions to much of Leitrim, with a yellow weather warning for snow and ice in effect until 9am tomorrow, Tuesday, January 6.

A number of schools across the county have been forced to close due to difficult travel conditions. These closures include Glenfarne NS, Drumkeeran NS, Drumlease NS, St Brigid’s NS, St Joseph’s NS, St Clare’s Comprehensive School, Lough Allen College, Drumshanbo Vocational School, and Mohill Community College.

Drivers and commuters are being urged to exercise extreme caution as the first cold snap of the year takes hold.

The cold snap is bringing wintry showers, with some snow accumulation, along with severe frost and icy patches in places, leading to hazardous travel conditions and reduced visibility.

The weather warning is due to lift at 9am tomorrow. Today will see maximum temperatures of just 1 to 6 degrees, with light to moderate northwest to west winds.

Tonight, temperatures are expected to fall to between -2 and +3 degrees, with the coldest conditions early on. Winds will remain light to moderate, westerly at first before backing southwesterly by morning.
