Concerns raised over dog fouling at popular Leitrim coastal walk

Signage at Access to the Sea in Tullaghan will be upgraded to newer versions that highlight the relevant fines applicable for dog fouling.
Concerns have been raised about dog fouling at a popular walking spot in north Leitrim, which officially opened last summer.
Access to the Sea in Tullaghan, located on the Wild Atlantic Way, offers public access to Leitrim’s only stretch of coastline.
Since its official opening by former TD Heather Humphreys, it has become a well frequented destination for both tourists and locals.
At April’s meeting of Manorhamilton Municipal District, Cllr James Gilmartin brought forward a motion calling for action to tackle the 'ongoing issue' of dog fouling at the landmark.
“This is not only unpleasant but also poses health risks, especially to children and maintenance staff,” Cllr Gilmartin’s motion stated.
He welcomed the increased use of the Access to the Sea by the public but raised concerns about dog owners allowing their pets off-lead near the green area.
“It’s not being cleaned up afterwards and it’s causing problems for people who have to go and clean up the area in relation to strimming and cutting the lawn,” he said.
Cllr Gilmartin requested the Council to install clear and visible signage reminding owners of their responsibilities, and to increase the presence of community wardens during peak times.
A response from the Environment department noted that two signs are already in place along the walkway encouraging people to clean up after their dogs.
These signs will be upgraded to new versions that highlight the relevant fines applicable for dog fouling.
A dog waste bin is also located in the car park, maintained by Leitrim Animal Welfare.
A playground will be installed later in the year, raising concerns that the issue could escalate.
“It’s only a couple of reckless dog owners but it’s only going to be a bigger problem in a few months' time when the playground is installed,” commented Cllr Warnock.
Vincent Dwyer, Head of Finance, Environment, Climate, Sustainable Communities and Library Services told members that the playground will be included in weekly inspections by community wardens, and he will liaise with them about broader monitoring efforts.
Cllr Gilmartin also proposed a motion calling for an upgrade to the public lighting at Glencar Community Centre.
A response from the Roads department confirmed that the Council will advise and direct the people involved in upgrading their external lighting.
