Former Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson to launch autobiography in Leitrim

The former Sinn Féin MEP spent 13 years behind bars before going on to serve in the Northern Ireland Assembly and European Parliament
The former Sinn Féin MEP and MLA will attend a special book launch at McGirls Bar in Ballinamore on Friday, October 30, giving local audiences an opportunity to hear about her life, political career and experiences during the Troubles. Born and raised in the Bogside area of Derry, Anderson's life has been shaped by decades of conflict, imprisonment and political change.
Her autobiography, Choosing the Struggle, charts her journey from growing up in Derry to becoming involved in republican activism, spending 13 years in prison and eventually entering electoral politics. Following her release, Anderson went on to serve as an elected representative in the Northern Ireland Assembly and the European Parliament.
The book also explores the personal side of her story, including the friendships, family relationships and comradeship that sustained her through some of the most challenging periods of her life. Women, family and community feature prominently throughout her account, offering readers an insight into the personal experiences behind her political journey.
The Ballinamore event forms part of a series of book launches taking place across Ireland, where Anderson has been reflecting on the events and decisions that shaped her life. The evening will offer local readers an opportunity to hear directly from Anderson about her experiences, the writing of her autobiography and her reflections on a turbulent period in Irish history. The Leitrim launch of Choosing the Struggle takes place at McGirls Bar, Ballinamore, on Friday, October 30.
