Manorhamilton's St Patrick’s Day Castle Street Band’s 70th anniversary celebrations

Celebrations and ceremonies, plus a commemorative booklet launch, will take place in Manorhamilton on St. Patrick's Day to mark the 70th anniversary of the founding of the famous Castle Street Band.
Outlining the story of the Castle Street Band's formation seven decades ago, Castle Street's, Cathal O'Connell says “in 2019 several local people, who had family members in the famous Castle Street Band, decided to erect a plaque to commemorate its existence. The Castle Street Band entertained and gave great enjoyment to the people of Manorhamilton and surrounding areas in the 1950s, '60s and '70s.
“The plaque was erected at the Fair Green on Castle Street in December 2019 but as we all know, unfortunately, the Covid Pandemic came along and it’s official unveiling had to be put on hold. In anticipation of officially unveiling the plaque when restrictions were lifted, it was suggested that a short booklet should be compiled to properly tell the story of the band.
“Everyone is invited to attend the unveiling of the plaque at the Fair green on Friday March 17 at 2pm followed by the official launch of the commemorative booklet at the Community Centre Manorhamilton from 2.30pm to 4pm. The booklet will be available to purchase at the Community Centre on the day.
“We will also have archive photographs on display as well as an original uniform and a selection of the instruments that were used by the band. We are also delighted to have obtained film footage that was taken by Georgie Thompson on the band’s first outing on St. Patrick's Day 1953 which we will screen on the day.
“Refreshments will also be provided at the event. It should be a great occasion and a great time to reminisce about the band and meet old friends.”
