Carrick-on-Shannon LEA
Name: Lola Gonzalez
Address: Castlecara Road, Carrick-on-Shannon
Occupation: Diversity & Inclusion EU Project Specialist
Party: Social Democrats
Why have you decided to run in the Local Elections?
I have decided to run because I believe that we need new voices in our local government. We have problems which have been in our town since I have lived here that will benefit from new ideas. Local government can benefit from having more women in the chamber as well. We see so little representation, so I want to be the change that I would like to see.
Why should people vote for you?
People deserve a good quality of life with access to decent public services. I see a town that can progress to the benefit of all with more innovation. I will stand for the dignity of our community, especially those voices that are less heard. I will strive for transparency and sustainability in our council. Furthermore, I will work hard to make Carrick-on-Shannon an inclusive town that is a great place to live for everyone. I believe that my skills will be of benefit to our community flourishing.
What do you think is lacking in your area and what will you be campaigning for?
There are several things I’ve observed over the nine years that I’ve lived here and issues that have come up at the door since I started to canvass last year. They are all essential towards making our community better and meeting constituent's needs.
I will stand for improving our public transport along with cycling infrastructure in our area.
I believe that we should also look at our villages in this regard. This is important for the community and our tourism.
I will advocate to increase the number of public spaces and amenities. In addition, I will fight to develop a community centre for Carrick-on-Shannon. As someone who belongs to a community organisation and networks with several this is an essential space needed in our community.
I will ask for investment support for small businesses. I see too many businesses in our town closing. To provide jobs and have a healthy economy, we must support our local businesses during these hard economic times.
I will foster a diverse, tolerant, and multicultural community in Leitrim. This is of benefit to all of us and the growth of a healthy society.
I will ensure affordable, social, and secure housing is available in our area. Housing is a right to all of us and no one should be left on the streets.
