Michelle Brennan-Shyabo reflects on her experience as a first-time candidate

An increase in Sinn Féin votes has been evident in North Leitrim
Tallies for Manorhamilton LEA currently stand at 96%, with seats looking likely to be secured by James Gilmartin (IND), Mary Bohan (FF), Justin Warnock (FF), Felim Gurn (IND) and Pádraig Fallon (SF). Michelle Brennan-Shyabo, first time candidate with Sinn Féin, has so far received 364 first preference votes.
Commenting on her result thus far, Brennan-Shyabo said: "So far, we've increased our Sinn Féin vote in North Leitrim so that's a good base going forward hopefully for the next local election.
"My experience was fantastic, I really, really enjoyed it. Overall it has been a positive experience. I've really learned a lot, that's what I'll be taking away from it today," she said.
Even if unsuccessful in election, she remarked how rewarding the experience of running for local elections has been.
"You learn a lot about the struggles people have and it makes you realise that things really need to change. I've been able to help people along the way and that's been really nice.
"I'm going to continue helping people, and I'm not going to give up. I love helping people and it makes me happy.
"I was able to help a lady find a house and even just to see the sense of relief on her face. It really makes me emotional.
"That's the biggest thing I'll take away from this."
