Manorhamilton councillors granted Part 8 approval for plans to redevelop the town's former courthouse into a multi-use community facility.

Manorhamilton councillors have approved plans to transform the town's long-vacant courthouse into a multi-use community space.

The proposal received Part 8 approval from members at a meeting of Manorhamilton Municipal District, allowing the project to proceed, subject to the relevant statutory processes.

The Part 8 planning application provides for the adaptive reuse, conservation and sensitive redevelopment of the former Manorhamilton Courthouse and bridewell building.

The proposed development aims to transform the historic structure into a multi-use facility, with cultural and community space on the ground floor and office accommodation on the first floor.

Senior Planner Bernard Greene presented a report to councillors, confirming that no submissions or observations were received from members of the public in relation to the proposal.

A submission was received from the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage stating that archaeological monitoring will be required, as the courthouse is a protected structure.

A bat specialist will also supervise the project, as there are currently three different species of bats in the semi-derelict building. A derogation licence from the National Parks and Wildlife Service will be required before construction can begin.

The Council also intends to apply for capital funding through the Rural Regeneration Development Fund. The project is being progressed by the Council in collaboration with the Manorhamilton Town Team and local stakeholders.

The Part 8 proposal was approved unanimously by councillors, who welcomed the redevelopment.

Cllr Felim Gurn commented that Sean MacDiarmada Street in the town has been brought back and that this development will add to it.

“It’s great to see this development taking place. It’s been lying idle for a number of years,” added Cllr James Gilmartin.

“The development is most wanted in Manorhamilton and hopefully we see this proceed at pace,” said Cllr Pádraig Fallon.
