Kilkenny gardaí have shared a shocking speed detection on the M9 motorway after a vehicle was recorded travelling at 162km/h

Kilkenny gardaí have taken to social media to highlight a recent speeding incident.

The incident involved a motorist who was caught driving at 162km/h on the M9 motorway.

An Garda Siochána Kilkenny shared a post on Wednesday (November 4) to show a picture of a speed detection camera capturing a vehicle going 162km/h.

That speed is 42km/h over the 120km/h speed limit on the motorway.

In a caption accompanying the image, gardaí kept it short: "M9 today. Not ok".

Gardaí are also keen to emphasise at all times that a speed limit is not a target.

It is simply the maximum speed you are legally entitled to drive at on a stretch of road.

You must drive at a speed appropriate to road and weather conditions, volumes of traffic present and likelihood of hazards.

These are all vital ingredients which drivers must factor in every time they drive.

When drivers ignore these factors, even travelling below a particular speed limit, they could very easily find themselves in a potential crash scenario.

A small reduction in your speed could have a massive effect on the outcome for you or others.

Slowing down can save lives.
