St Brigid's Day is celebrated on February 1 each year

Kilkenny made a notable contribution to the St Brigid's Day celebrations on Thursday, February 1, as local artist Theresa Carroll's felt image of St Brigid was chosen from thousands of entries for display in Kildare for the year of St Brigid.

St Brigid or 'St Brigid of Kildare' is one the country's three national saints along with Patrick and Columba.

The image hand made of felt was chosen to represent St Brigid of Ireland.

Co Kildare's association with the Irish Saint was celebrated across the county with a number of events taking place including a recreation of the St Brigid's cross by local school pupils at the Curragh Racecourse.

'The Brigid 1500 programme' will also take place this weekend in the county, bringing together culinary, visual arts and musical performances across the Bank Holiday weekend.

Meanwhile, locally, Over 800attended the annual St. Brigid's Day Service in St Fiacres Church, Loughboy on Thursday, February 1.

The service led by the Kilkenny Gospel Choir and Fr. Willie Purcell celebrated the 23 rd year of the service.
