There was shock in County Waterford over the weekend after “extremely dangerous” fireworks were set off in a local town square.

The incident occurred in Grattan Square in Dungarvan on Friday evening last.

A video which has circulated on social media appears to show a group of young males setting off a firework in the centre of the town.

Waterford Sinn Féin TD Conor McGuinness condemned the incident in a post on social media.

In the Facebook post, Deputy McGuinness wrote: “I’m aware of anti-social behaviour in Dungarvan last night, including the use of fireworks in Grattan Square last night.

“This is not an isolated incident and marks a worrying escalation in an ongoing issue. The improper use of fireworks is extremely dangerous.

“In particular the firing of projectiles in our town centre and their exploding at head height is utterly unacceptable.”

He continued by saying that he had been in touch with the gardaí in relation to the incident.

“The risk to people and property from such recklessness cannot be overstated.

“I have reached out to Garda management to raise my concerns around escalating anti-social behaviour.

“There must be no repeat of last night’s behaviour.”

Deputy McGuinness concluded by asking anyone who wished to discuss the matter with him to reach out to him privately.
