Wareham and Cauley Woodrow netted for the Chairboys.

Wycombe boss Tom Hounsell hailed “unbelievable” Jayden Wareham after the striker’s first-half goal paved the way for a 2-0 win over Burton.

Wareham scored his sixth goal since signing from Exeter just before the summer deadline, charging down a 21st-minute clearance from Brewers goalkeeper Corey Addai that went into the net.

Cauley Woodrow headed the second eight minutes into the second half for a victory that leaves Hounsell with just one defeat from nine league games since he took over from Michael Duff in September.

Hounsell said: “Jayden is unbelievable with his high press. It’s a real key to his game and he got his rewards for that. He did it tirelessly right through the game.”

Hounsell can call on Wareham, Woodrow and former England forward Danny Ings, and he added: “The three strikers we have are a credit to the work that was done in the summer. We wanted to make sure we strengthened in that area and we did.

“It’s important that we have different options and each one of those players brings different quality. There’s real diversity to our top line and we just need to get the balance right week by week.

“The goals were a credit to the players – they have incredible nous and game sense to threaten in those moments.”

Hounsell also heaped praise on coach Sam Vokes, a former striker, saying: “He does great work with those players.”

Burton boss Gary Bowyer pointed to the ‘gulf’ between the respective sides’ strikers.

He said: “Wycombe have got a striker they probably paid £2million for in the summer who I thought was terrific. He gave Curtis Tilt a hard time, even though Tilty had a right go at it. It just shows you the difference in strikers.

“Then they take Woodrow off – we all know about him from his Burton days. The gulf was massive.

“I’ve seen Wareham’s goal back and there was a hand involved but I have to say we didn’t get anything from the official today.

“With Wycombe’s second goal, we don’t check a runner and that’s inexperience. It’s what we’re like in spells.

“First half we were miles off it, second best to everything. There was no shouting at half-time. I just said to them ‘look, that’s not us, let’s get out there and have a go’.

“To be fair, the players did that early in the second half when we had a great chance.”
