A British national is reported to be among survivors after two Greek firefighting helicopters crashed, killing two other people.

The helicopters crashed in midair on Sunday as crews fought a major wildfire, according to the Associated Press.

The crash happened west of the capital Athens.

Two crew members who were recovered alive were one British and one Greek national, while the two who died were one Greek and one Danish national, according to reports.

It comes as winds drove flames deeper into the Athens region on Sunday and forced fresh evacuations.

Two firefighters died battling a fire on Crete earlier this week, while a third was killed in a separate fire in the Peloponnese, the Associated Press said.

Meanwhile, fires in France and Spain have driven about a third of a million people from homes and tourist sites.
