CIARÁN Frawley has hailed the impact of two local scrum-halves who have helped him hit the ground running since his summer move to Galway.

Frawley headed off to Irish camp this buzzing after a brilliant start to his Connacht career where he was partnered at half-back by Monivea native Caolin Blade, who he has played for Ireland with in two games, and for the past two outings with Ballinasloe’s Colm Reilly.

An injury to Ben Murphy and the summer departure to Ulster by his former Ballinasloe RFC teammate Matthew Devine, has opened the door for Reilly to get more game-time and the 27-year-old has seized it in the wins over Saracens and Zebre.

“He's brilliant. He's your typical kind of young nine,” said Frawley. “He's electric, he’s excited, but he's curious as well. And he wants to get better. And I love playing with nines like that because they're full of questions, but they like to try stuff as well.

“You see him taking that little short side against Sarries, which led to a try. And that kind of stuff is brilliant to play with. He's not too safe, he plays the game in front of him, he's been brilliant to step in.

“Obviously, I've experienced playing with Caolin Blade. He's unbelievable. Ben Murphy is obviously injured at the moment. And then Albert Lindner as well, who's a young academy scrum-half, is another exciting prospect.

“But I think Colm Reilly has really stepped up while the opportunities have been there for him.

“And he led the week well with me as well. And he's given me confidence. So it was nice to be able to do two in a row with him.”

Friday’s 48-27 win over Zebre was the first time Frawley has started four games in a row at out-half and looks set to play a huge role in Andy Farrell’s side for the Nations Championship.

Frawley prepared for international return by taking over the kicking duties from full-back Sam Gilbert, enjoying a mixed night off the tee.

He kicked four conversions, two of them straightforward kicks and two from the left wing, and missed difficult kicks from either side before being withdrawn after 57 minutes.

The Connacht out half ran the backline with precision and heads off to Irish camp from a side which he has steered to 15 tries in seven days after they backed up their 45-36 win over Saracens with another try-fest.

“It's great to get time in the saddle and just sort of find your voice off the pitch, and on the pitch as well. And I think it's brilliant to be able to take that into the likes of camp that's coming up,” said the 28-year-old.

“But the work we've been doing here has been brilliant for me. And Stuart's been giving me opportunities to stand up in front of the group and present to them the way I want to play, the way the team wants to play. And I think it's been great for me in terms of leadership role in this team.

“And it's an area that I felt the need to improve over the summer. And I feel like it's getting better and better,” added Frawley, who looks set to add to his 15 Irish caps in the coming weeks.
