Galway County Council's planning enforcement against Supermac's Loughrea

Supermac’s has applied for retention planning permission for promotional items erected at one of its County Galway restaurants without authorisation.
Galway County Council is pursuing Supermac’s through the courts over an alleged breach of planning rules in Loughrea.
The enforcement relates to unauthorised flags, banners and signs at Supermac’s Loughrea on the Athenry Road.
Loughrea District Court this week (Monday June 29) heard that the company had now applied to the local authority for retention planning permission.
Solicitor John Nash, on behalf of Supermac’s, confirmed to Judge Michael Connellan that a retention planning application was lodged last Friday.
The County Council issued an enforcement notice in December 2024 asking Supermac’s to remove all signage, all banners and all flagpoles that it alleged were not granted planning permission in the townland of Cosmona, Loughrea.
The respondents were listed as Softdrive Limited Ballybrit Business Park, Ballybrit, Galway; and directors of that company, Una McDonagh and Patrick McDonagh, who is also secretary.
Supermac’s Ireland Limited of Ballybrit Industrial Park, Ballybrit, Galway was also listed as a respondent; as were directors of that company, Una McDonagh and Patrick McDonagh, who is also the company’s secretary.
At the latest sitting in Loughrea, solicitor for the County Council Dermot Caslin said an enforcement officer visited and inspected the premises last week.
He confirmed a number of items including signage, banners and flagpoles had been removed.
Mr Caslin said retention planning permission was received by the Council for the remaining items. A planning decision was due in August, he said.
Judge Connellan adjourned to October to allow the planning process take its course.
