A chance encounter on a Galway street sparked an unlikely transatlantic search – and when the mystery man finally came forward, nobody expected his response.

A framed photograph of two young strangers holding hands on a Galway street more than 30 years ago has resurfaced in America, sparking an online search that has since gone viral on both sides of the Atlantic.

The picture, taken in the early 1990s, shows the pair smiling in matching denim, unaware that their photograph would spend decades in an American doctor's collection.

The search eventually led to Galway native Ciarán Conneely, who immediately recognised himself.

"Oh man, I've a whole lot of extra hair in that but it's definitely me!" he joked

The story began when American doctor Charles was holidaying in Galway with his late wife in the 1990s.

A keen photographer, he struck up a conversation with the young pair on a city street and offered to take their picture.

According to his family, he asked for an address so he could send them a copy, but the details were apparently lost.

Determined to get the photograph to its owners, Charles had it enlarged and framed and even attempted to send it to Galway without a proper address.

The package was returned to America, where the picture remained among his belongings for decades.

Fast-forward to 2026, when his daughter-in-law Leigh Ann Zerr came across it while clearing out his former office in Independence, Missouri.

Intrigued by the mystery pair, she launched an appeal on Threads and shared the story in the All Things Galway (Ireland) Facebook group, hoping someone might recognise them.

"Can you identify these people??" she asked.

The appeal soon reached Ciarán, who joined the conversation on social media.

"Charles sounds like a great guy, what a story. That's from my beautiful home town of Galway, I hope he enjoyed himself there," he wrote.

But anyone hoping for a long-lost love story was in for a surprise.

"That's Nadine, a German girl I met that summer but haven't seen since alas! Sorry to disappoint y'all!"

Ciarán couldn't resist another joke about their matching outfits.

"By the looks of things, we must have been drawn together by our shared passion for denim."

He added: "Hope she's doing good and like myself has nice memories of that summer."

And it seems Ciarán's wife has been enjoying the unexpected trip down memory lane too.

"My wife is getting a great kick out of all this btw – keeps her on her toes," he joked.

Looking back, Ciarán recalled the photograph being taken around 1992 or 1993.

"A great era, life was simpler, hope it brought back some fond memories for people."

Leigh Ann later updated her Facebook appeal to confirm that Ciarán had been identified, adding: "My father in law is delighted with all of this."

But one mystery remains.

While Ciarán has been found, Nadine has yet to be traced – and may have no idea that a chance encounter on a Galway street has become an unlikely transatlantic talking point.
