HSE signs €11.3 million contract for major Galway healthcare facility

The development has been welcomed by local Fine Gael TD and Minister for Education Hildegarde Naughton as a “vital project” for the area west of Galway city
The Health Service Executive (HSE) has signed an €11.3 million contract for the development of a major community healthcare facility in Knocknacarra, which is expected to be completed within 15 months.
The health authority awarded the contract for the deep retrofit and refurbishment of Black A at Galway West Business Park to Sligo-based Kilcawley Construction, according to a notice published on Monday.
The development will see around 3,750 square metres of open-plan administrative office space at the former Aviva building transformed into an Enhanced Community Care (ECC) hub and primary care centre serving Knocknacarra and Salthill.
The works include extensive mechanical and electrical installations, as well as the fit-out of non-acute community diagnostic and treatment facilities. The contract is worth €11,309,345 plus VAT.
The development has been welcomed by local Fine Gael TD and Minister for Education Hildegarde Naughton as a “vital project” for the area west of Galway city.
The new healthcare hub will act as a permanent base for an Integrated Care Programme (ICP) focusing on specialist teams for chronic disease and older people, alongside two separate primary care teams to support the local rollout of the Community Health Network (CHN).
The procurement process attracted three tenders, which were evaluated on the basis of 70% for price and 30% for quality. The construction and clinical fit-out works are scheduled to be completed over a 15-month timeframe.
The project involves the acquisition of Block A and its adaptation to modern clinical standards, forming a central part of state investment in Galway’s primary care infrastructure aimed at delivering treatment closer to home and reducing avoidable hospital admissions.
“I very much welcome this announcement by the HSE,” said Minister Naughton. “As a government, we really want people to have access to as much care as possible in their home and in their community.
“The Enhanced Community Care Programme is transforming patient care by expanding local healthcare services, reducing hospital dependency, and enhancing patient outcomes,” she added.
“This programme shows our commitment to delivering high-quality, patient-centred care that meets the evolving needs of our communities, in our communities.”
