It was initially approved then appealed before being given the go ahead but on one condition

A housing development in a Galway area which received its final approval has also been issued with a condition that nobody can move in until the water connection is upgraded.

An Coimisiún Pleanála gave the go ahead to the estate in Mountbellew which would see 39 homes built behind the Aldi store.

Cahermorris Developments Ltd’s plans were approved initially earlier in 2026 but were appealed before being given the green light.

But the planners state that none of the homes can be occupied until the houses are all connected to an upgraded Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Elsewhere, a major developer has been refused planning for a new Galway housing estate of over 100 homes.

Plans for the new build Loughrea estate by Jardonelle Limited were squashed by county planners over several issues.

The 107 new homes - which would be situated alongside existing homes in Baunoge - were to be a mix of one-bed, two-bed, three-bed and four bedroom homes.

There were various reasons why the plans were refused with the main points including: The impact on its surrounding environment; the lack of standard in the road design in the area and also the lack of open space.

And in other construction news, the announcement of Dexcom has led to Athenry becoming one of the most sought after places to live in Galway and indeed the west of Ireland.

So, it will come as no surprise that plans have been submitted for two different developments in the area totalling over 200 new homes.

Athenry Luxury Housing Developments Ltd has lodged planning for 136 homes in Raheen, Ballygarraun North and Ballygarraun South.

This development would contain 104 three bedroom homes, 21 two beds and 11 four bed homes.

Galway County Council will decide on the application in mid August just a week before the second development for Athenry is up for decision.

Leadlane is also seeking permission to build 69 homes on a site in Ballydavid South.

Their development contains plans for 45 three bed terraced houses as well as ten three bed semi-dethatched houses; six two bed semi detached houses and eight, four bedroom houses.

There would be 115 car park spaces as well as charging points for electric vehicles and bicycle parking spots with a decision coming on August 23.
