More than 30 events across the county highlighted practical ways to support a greener future

Communities across Mayo took part in more than 30 events to mark Ireland’s 10th Climate Action Week, celebrating local initiatives and encouraging people to take practical steps towards a more sustainable future.

Supported by Mayo County Council, the community-led events took place from October 9 to 21, with a significant increase in participation compared with previous years.

The free events were open to the public and covered a wide range of activities, including film screenings, children’s art classes, swap and repair workshops, food-growing initiatives, cooking and preserving demonstrations, energy-saving advice talks and local biodiversity walks.

The programme aimed to raise awareness of climate action, celebrate community resilience and inspire positive change across the county.

With activities taking place at different locations and times, there were opportunities for people of all ages and interests to get involved, share practical knowledge and discover how small actions at individual and community level can make a difference.

Organisers also highlighted the value of bringing generations together, with several groups reporting positive experiences as younger and older community members shared stories, knowledge and a common appreciation of nature.

The intergenerational connections were described as particularly rewarding, demonstrating how community events can strengthen local relationships while inspiring action for a greener future.

The events formed part of a nationwide programme marking the 10th year of Climate Action Week, which saw hundreds of activities take place across Ireland.
