A gallery at Custom House Studios & Gallery in Westport has been named in honour of the late Margaret Adams in recognition of her longstanding contribution to the arts and the local creative community.

On Thursday last, Councillor Brendan Mulroy, Cathaoirleach of Westport-Belmullet Municipal District, unveiled a plaque marking the naming of the Margaret Adams Gallery.

Margaret served as chairperson of the board of Custom House Studios & Gallery from 2002 until her death in February 2025, dedicating 23 years to supporting the organisation and its work.

The unveiling was attended by family members and representatives from the arts and local community, including Breege Staunton, Katriona Gillispie, administrator at Custom House Studios & Gallery, Jacqueline and Evelyn Horan, Cllr Mulroy, Minister for Social Protection and Minister for Rural and Community Development Dara Calleary, Cormac Ó Cionnaith, Pat Kenny and Deirdre Adams.

The name of the gallery recognises Margaret’s commitment to the development of the arts in Westport and her role in supporting the work of Custom House Studios & Gallery over more than two decades.

An Anonymous Art Sale in Margaret’s memory also took place on the night, featuring more than 170 original artworks by artists from across the area.

Each artwork was priced at €50, offering members of the public an opportunity to purchase an original piece while supporting two important causes.

Proceeds from the initiative will support the work of Mayo Roscommon Hospice, while the event also celebrated Margaret’s contribution to the local arts community.

The gallery naming and fundraising event brought together art, remembrance and community spirit, providing a lasting tribute to a woman whose work helped shape the cultural life of Westport.
