Let battle commence between the Baalbec and the Sky Blues on Sunday

SCOIL Mocheallóg is looking forward to welcoming GAA stars bringing a number of cups in the coming weeks but there is room for one more!

Limerick senior hurler Shane O’Brien will bring the Liam MacCarthy Cup, local players on the Limerick minor team, who won the All-Ireland, will arrive with the Irish Press Cup while the most recent triumph was Kilmallock’s young hurlers in the Premier Minor Hurling Championship.

Leonie Passmore, principal, said hopefully they will have the Daly Cup as well. “That would be the icing on the cake,” she smiled.

Na Piarsaigh stand in the way of Kilmallock winning the county senior hurling championship for the first time since 2021. “We have our work cut out for us but Kilmallock people like a good challenge,” said Ms Passmore.

Excitement is building in the school of almost 300 pupils and 50 staff ahead of Sunday.

“The senior players are a great inspiration to them. The boys and girls can see their pictures up in the school from the various times that they would have brought honour to the school.

“So they see that if they keep playing with the club and school that they too will be coming back to Scoil Mocheallóg in years to come with honours for both club and county,” said Ms Passmore. The principal stresses the strong links between Kilmallock GAA Club and the school.

“The vast majority of the senior team are former pupils. They are great role models and are very generous with their time.

“If I need them to come in to present medals, coaching or when we have our indoor hurling finals, one of them will come down and ref it. They're never short of giving back to the school,” said Ms Passmore, who has promised no homework on the Monday after the mid-term break if Kilmallock win!
