GARDAI have launched a major investigation after a Limerick man was stabbed to death in Dublin following a “violent domestic row” in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The deceased man has been named locally as Jamie Bailey, aged 38, originally from Rossa Avenue, Mulgrave Street in the city. He also lived in Castleconnell for a period before moving to Dublin.

A garda manhunt commenced on Sunday to locate his killer who fled the scene of the fatal assault which occurred at Blackhorse Avenue, Dublin 7.

A garda spokesperson said: “A male was discovered with serious injuries on the footpath at Blackhorse Place and conveyed from the scene to Mater Misericordiae University Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

“The scene has been preserved for forensic examination by the Garda Technical Bureau. The Coroner and the Office of the State Pathologist have been notified and a post-mortem examination will be arranged in due course.”

This investigation is being coordinated from an incident room at the Bridewell Garda Station under the direction of a senior investigating officer.

The Irish Examiner, who first reported that the victim is from Limerick, described it as a “violent domestic row which ended in a fatal stabbing on a Dublin residential street”.

There were three men, including Mr Bailey, and a woman present at the time. It is believed one of the men stabbed Mr Bailey.

The deceased man, who is the father of a number of children, is well known to gardai and has served time in prison.

A garda spokesperson said: “Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to come forward, particularly those who were in the Blackhorse Avenue/Blackhorse Place area or who may have video footage (including dash-cam) between 2am and 3.30am on the morning of Sunday, October 18.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact Bridewell Garda Station on 01 666 8200, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any garda station.”

A number of tributes have been paid online following news of the city native’s untimely death in the capital.

"Rest in peace, Jamie, a lovely man. Thinking of your kids and family at this heartbreaking time,” wrote one.

Another person said on social media: “Rest in peace Jamie. May God give you a peaceful bed in heaven. Thinking of your family at this sad time.”

Detectives have harvested CCTV and are piecing together the events that led up to Mr Bailey’s death. The garda investigation is ongoing.
