A BUSY Limerick road was closed on Friday evening after a road traffic collision that occurred earlier in the day.

Emergency services attended the scene of a serious two-vehicle collision in Adare close to the entrance to Adare Manor Golf Club. The incident occurred at approximately 3:45pm this Friday afternoon.

The N21 through Adare was still closed at 8pm with diversions in place. Motorists have reported long delays on the old Adare to Croom road due to the road closure.

Three fire units attended the scene along with a number of gardai and ambulances. At the time of publishing, emergency services were still at the scene.

It is understood that there are a number of serious injuries following the collision which involved a truck and at least one other vehicle.

Local councillor Adam Teskey said that his thoughts were with the lorry driver and everyone involved in the incident.

"Unfortunately that road is no stranger to accidents. I would be encouraging the council to do some sort of road configuration of the junction there.

"We can't rely on everything to be resolved by the new bypass, something has to be done now to avoid more carnage in the future".
