Torch of hope: Limerick prepares for Darkness Into Light walks with one new addition

Pallasgreen passes the baton to Cappamore who will host the event for the first time for Pieta
THE LATEST parish to join the Darkness Into Light (DIL) community is Cappamore who have been passed the torch for east Limerick by Pallasgreen.
Cappamore joins walks in Limerick city, Kilmallock, Knockainey, Hospital, Glenbrohane and others early this Saturday, May 9 to help shine a light for those impacted by suicide and to help keep hope alive for those suffering from depression or self harm. Funds raised go to Pieta who provide free, accessible support to people affected by suicide and self-harm.
Cappamore Community Garden was the setting for a well-attended and meaningful gathering last Wednesday to mark the official launch of the village’s inaugural DIL walk.
The event brought together local residents, volunteers, and representatives from a range of community organisations, reflecting a strong collective commitment to supporting mental health awareness and suicide prevention initiatives.
During the launch, organisers expressed their appreciation to local stores Centra and Spar in Cappamore for their generous sponsorship of refreshments and continued support in the lead-up to the event. Acknowledgement was also given to the numerous volunteers whose dedication and preparatory work have been instrumental in bringing the initiative to fruition.
Although unable to attend the launch, Mayor John Moran was recognised for his support of the initiative and is expected to participate in the walk itself, where he will assist in leading proceedings.
A special note of thanks was extended to Cllr Noreen Stokes, who attended the launch and has been a strong and consistent supporter. Her presence was warmly welcomed, and she was acknowledged for symbolically “passing the baton” from Pallasgreen — where DIL has been successfully organised in recent years — to Cappamore.
Particular recognition was also afforded to the organising team in Pallasgreen, whose experience, guidance, and generosity in sharing their knowledge were instrumental in enabling Cappamore to establish its own event this year.
Ger O’Connell, one of the Pallasgreen DIL organisers, told the Leader they are thrilled to pass the torch to Cappamore.
“We had a very memorable three years. It brought a great spirit to the parish, shone a light on Pieta and showed there is help out there. If it helped one person we will be delighted with that legacy. We wish Cappamore the very best of luck and will support them any way we can,” said Ger.
Speakers emphasised the core message of Darkness Into Light: the importance of community, connection, and mutual support. The symbolic walk from darkness into dawn serves as a reminder of hope and solidarity, with participants walking together to demonstrate support for those impacted by mental health challenges.
The launch concluded with an appeal to the wider community to participate, support the cause, and continue fostering a culture of openness and care.
