BREAKING: Toxic substance found in badger sett in Tipperary

The National Parks and Wildlife Service is appealing to anyone with information to come forward
The National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is appealing for information from the public after a toxic substance was found in badger sett in north Tipperary.
Staff from the Department of Agriculture, Food and Marine (DAFM) made the discovery last month in area north of Carrig.
The incident is being treated as a premeditated attempt to poison a protected wild animal.
NPWS say DAFM staff came across a number of apples that contained an 'unidentified substance' at the entrance to the sett.
The material was brought to the Regional Veterinary Lab in Athlone for analysis.
The substance, which is highly toxic to badgers was identified, but NPWS is not releasing the information for operational reasons.
NPWS is appealing to anybody with information to come forward.
Badgers are protected under the Wildlife Acts (1976 as amended).
It is an offence to wilfully interfere with the breeding or resting place of a badger.
It is also an offence to injure or hunt a badger. Members of the public can contact NPWS confidentially at the NPWS Regional office 01-5393199 or email [email protected].
