A new project is seeking expressions of interest from local individuals and groups to identify wetland sites to be restored

The new Just Transition project has been launched by the Tóchar team at the National Parks and Wildlife Service, with the aim of identifying new wetland sites to be restored around the country and in particular to Tipperary the areas of Carrick-on-Suir and Thurles.

The project is looking for the help of landowners, communities and local groups to help identify new areas where wetland restoration is possible.

Tóchar is a three-year wetlands restoration project, co-funded by the Government of Ireland and the European Union through the EU Just Transition Fund Programme.

BENEFITS

There are many benefits to restoring wetlands for local communities including improving water quality and providing flood protection. With low water quality levels an issue in Tipperary due to a lack of waste water treatment centres, the allocation of even one restoration of a wetland in the Tipperary area would help water quality levels in a small but positive way.

Monica Byrne, Project Administrator of the Tóchar project team said: “We ask interested groups (or individuals) to get in touch with us, fill out the expression of interest form, give us whatever information you have, so that we can start connecting and co-operating”.
